What do you do?

I am a writer and actress and very passionate about the environment and our planet. Last year I started an online magazine called Dare2Magazine - www.dare2mag.com - which focuses on sustainable and responsible living. I love what I do because I get to work with inspiring people doing amazing things from Donna Karen and Vivienne Westwood to Safia Minney and Tom Aikens. It's a very rewarding job and I am really looking forward to some exciting projects happening later this year.

What is your fondest memory of the beach?

Summer 2008, Eleuthera, Bahamas. It was a beautiful warm, still night. We had been partying on the beach at my house. The moon was so bright and full we could see everything, it was like the sun was shining. We all waded out into the shadow waters and played with the phosphorescence in the water. It was as though all the stars in the sky had fallen into the water. Absolutely magical.

I can't just pick one song but on my beach/boat iPod mix there is everything from Bob Marley and Collie Buddz to Lenny Kravitz and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley.

Not sure I should tell you! My beach in the Bahamas...no ones going to find you there. Perfect place for some sneaky topless tanning.

Shirley Leigh-Wood Oakes

Do you have any guilty pleasures at the beach?

Giving myself a full body sand scrub with the amazing pink sand. Best body scrub I have ever used. Better than any salt scrub in any spa. Oh, and eating ripe mangoes in the sea. It's the only way to eat them. You can get as messy as you want.

How long can you hold your breath underwater?

Long enough to spear lobsters and spider crabs hiding under the reef.

Shirley Leigh-Wood Oakes

What is your favourite sundowner and who would be your dream date?

A Lyford Cay Rum Dum and the certain special someone in my life ;-)

Shirley Leigh-Wood Oakes

What do you consider to be the top cause for concern for your oceans?

Over fishing. We all need to start paying attention. Nothing is going to change until customers start demanding for restaurants and chefs to be more responsible and only use sustainably sourced fish. I make a point of only eating at restaurants that are SRA approved (The Sustainable Restaurant Association - www.thesra.org. Another great site to check out when looking for great sustainable fish restaurants is Fish2Fork - www.fish2fork.com.

A great film to watch is End of the Line. It's a brilliant documentary. A foundation that I work with called BREEF (Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation - www.breef.org - is featured in the film. I am so proud of the work they are doing to educate people and to protect the beautiful waters of The Bahamas.

If you could live one day in the life of a sea creature what would it be, and why?

A Sea Turtle. I remember once sitting on the sea bed and playing with 2 beautiful turtles. The only reason I came to the surface was because I ran out of air. If I hadn't I think I might still be down there with them.

What is your favourite coral?

Fan Coral. I love the way it moves so gracefully with the current.

Alexandra Finlay

What do you do?

Founder and Managing Director of Fin's for Him, a men's footwear and accessory brand based on the King's Road, London. www.finsforhim.com

What is your fondest memory of the beach?

I spent my childhood summers in the Outer Hebrides, on the island of South Uist. I have fond memories of walking from our house down to the shore, although there were some days where the beach was off limits as the army would be firing missiles off the coast. We'd hear them whizzing by in the mornings over our kippers.

What song reminds you of beach life?

Donald Where's Your Trousers by Andy Stewart brings back happy memories of an afternoon on Jura, also up in the isles of Scotland, where we wheeled a piano out onto the beach one afternoon. He played this Scottish ditty and I sang along - just wonderful.

What are you beach essentials?

If I'm on a hot holiday, one of the many Sophia Rogge pareos that my mother and I are continually fighting over, my LL Bean Finbag, and my newest discovery, Turkish T's - fabulous lightweight beach towels in every imaginable colour. I love them so much, I'm stocking them on my website next summer! Scottish holidays are rather less colourful and a little more practical. I try and have plenty of pockets free to stash stones and shells collected on my travels down the shore.

What was your biggest fashion or beauty disaster at the beach?

My hair is always in a panic if I have to put the words beach and glamour into the same sentence. I struggle with the natural look; what looks so effortless on sun-kissed,sea-sprayed beach babes makes me look like an unshorn sheep. I have made a pact to get a Brazilian blowdry for the next fabulous beach holiday I'm invited on.

Who is your preferred travelling companion?

I actually quite like traveling on my own. I go on a lot of solo missions for work, and if it's further afield, there's often a day or so either end where I am fancy-free in a strange location. I find my own company very relaxing!

Name the most secluded beach on Earth

Now that would be telling!

How long can you hold your breath underwater?

As per my earlier answer, I don't like getting my hair wet, and so couldn't tell you the last time I went underwater!

What is your favourite sundowner and who would be your dream date?

I am partial to an early evening Negroni - never two though, the first puts quite enough lead in ones pencil. Alec Baldwin is currently top of my list of heart throbs.

What do you consider to be the top cause for concern for your oceans?

I watched the documentary End of the Line a few years ago about the overfishing of our oceans, and have made a conscious effort to avoid eating tuna since. I do have a work trip to Japan next month, so I can't promise I'll stick to it! It's strange, I suppose, that the ocean is such an alien place to us as we can't see what lies beneath, and so it's not a cause that's as much in our every day consciousness as what's happening on dry land. But we need to know the huge ripple effects that even the slightest shifts in eco-systems have on the planet, above or below sea level.

If you could live one day in the life of a sea creature what would it be, and why?

I think I'd be a Blue Whale. I like to make a big splash wherever I am.

What is your favourite coral?

They are all so magical, but I think I would have to go for either the False Brain Coral, as sometimes I feel like I have that sitting in my skull - or the Pearl Bubble Coral, which looks like a bowl of iridescent broad beans.

Andrea Gelardin

What song reminds you of beach life?

Jamaican roots reggae music all the way!

If I had to pick one song though it would be Luciano "Where There Is Life." In the Summer of 1995 when his album was released, I listened to it every day on the beach in Italy with Iacobella, Cristoforo and Noemi. Amazing memories :)

What was your biggest fashion or beauty disaster at the beach?

My biggest fashion disaster happened during my college years in the US when I was going into a hotel. My jeans got caught in the escalator that was in the very formal entrance. They got sucked into the escalator, the alarm sounded and I was left naked from my waist down with my ass in the air infront of all the hotel guests and people at the bar! My friends and I were in hysterics laughing and we sing and dance to this song all the time ever since then - "Let me see yo booty bounce!!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXoPhDoOcsI

What is your fondest memory of the beach?

Swanage where I used to go as child with my best friend Petra and our nannies, hour upon hour was spent at teh beach digging away, making sand castles worthy of prizes and eating ice cream. A proper English seaside experience complete with Beach hut and deck chairs. I am sure it used to be much hotter then.

What song reminds you of beach life?

I know it is a cliché but any Bob Marley does instantly conjure up happy beach feelings.

What are you beach essentials?

A Kaleida sarong (OBVIOUSLY), bat and ball for pro tanning, bobby brown sun spray, a hat to tame the locks, an ipod speaker and a group of friends.

What was your biggest fashion or beauty disaster at the beach?

A penchant for cycling shorts aged about 8, there was an amazing shop in downtown Nassau where I used to go every summer that sold some seriously special ones. The jazzier the better as far as I was concerned. My friend Clara and I had matching ones. Totally Obsessed. Another disaster was my hair pre the discovery of the Brazilian blowdry...outta control!

Who is your preferred travelling companion?

Of course my beloved Husband Richard and our dog Morris if he was allowed to come with me. If you were to ask me in 5 months I would say our baby too!

Name the most secluded beach on Earth

We spent the first part of our honey moon in Fernando di Noronha, an island off the coast of Brasil...that was pretty spectacular, unbelievably wild and rugged beaches, totally untouched and a maximum of two other people there at any time. It is a very protected island and marine national park so there is a glimmer of hope it will stay that way. Otherwise a beach in Kauai, Hawaii which was down a treacherous long dirt track but was totally empty and absolutely incredible and secluded.

Fernando di Noronha

How long can you hold your breath underwater?

I have no idea but I am ashamed to say my once probably record time has definitely diminished rapidly since I have got older.

What is your favourite sundowner and who would be your dream date?

Passion Fruit Capiroska...obviously I should of course say my husband is my dream date but I would say no to a sun downer aboard Johnny Depps beautiful boat. Maybe we could double up with him and Vanessa but I would rather not.

What do you consider to be the top cause for concern for your oceans?

Over fishing, Marine Pollution and the destruction of the sea creatures habitats are all serious concerns. Like everything each of these has a huge knock on effect and each contributes to the next.

If you could live one day in the life of a sea creature what would it be, and why?

Seahorses

I am transfixed by Seahorses, I think they are so beautiful and incredible looking. I would happily be one for a day and after that was over I would hope to be able to buy this print I have got my eye on a print of seahorses by LA based art-house Natural Curiosities. I also totally adore turtles and would love a day as one too. They look so wise and as if they should be wearing spectacles and telling you a story. I think they have quite a nice time floating about.

What do you do, in detail?

I am a corporate tax lawyer. I advise our clients (mainly FTSE 100 companies and banks) on the tax implications of private and public corporate transactions. We also do tax based structured finance. Essentially, we help our clients to be as tax-efficient as possible, both in the deals they do and in the structure of their organisations. It's quite technical and geeky, but then I am a total nerd.

What is your fondest memory of the beach?

I'm a proper fatty so it would inevitably be food-focused. Either over-indulging on ice-cream in the south of France with my family when I was a child, or, more recently, sitting in a wooden shack on the beach in St. Thomas in the American Virgin Isles eating far too much crab.

What song reminds you of beach life?

Blondie, The Tide is High.

What are you beach essentials?

My Sophia Rogge Kaleida sarong (obviously!), Dermalogica oil free matte block SPF 30 for my face and any sort of tanning oil for my body, preferably coconut scented.

Rebecca Wright

What was your biggest fashion or beauty disaster at the beach?

My hair! As soon as I get anywhere near water it cannot be tamed, no matter how hard I try. It looks beyond ridiculous. Please see photo above!

Who is your preferred travelling companion?

My boyfriend. He's so incredibly chilled which compliments my OCD tendencies. Though that said, he's actually probably more stressy when it comes to travelling than I am. Granted he doesn't make checklists, nor does he pack a week in advance, but we do have to get to the airport unnecessarily early.

Name the most secluded beach on Earth

It's probably not the most secluded as it's inhabited by African Penguins, but Boulders Bay in Cape Town is definitely my favourite. The beach itself is a penguin sanctuary so it's not accessible to the public but there is a vantage point from where you can view the penguins which are so unbelievably cute.

Boulders Bay Boulders Bay

How long can you hold your breath underwater?

I don't know. I haven't really tried. Probably not that long. If there was a competitive element to it then probably for longer.

What is your favourite sundowner and who would be your dream date?

Anything with gin in it. My dream date would be my boyfriend (VOM!).

What do you consider to be the top cause for concern for your oceans?

Global warming. Its impact on the ocean reaches further than melting polar ice caps causing sea levels to rise, destroying the natural habitat of Arctic animals and flooding beaches . All organisms on this planet are adapted to thrive in a specific environment and even a minor change in the conditions in which they live can put tremendous pressure on their ability to survive. Rising air and sea temperatures appear to have a number of wide-ranging implications for marine habitats: changes to the salinity of the ocean due to increased fresh melt water from the ice caps, reduction of krill and other small organisms that form the bedrock of the marine food chain, and coral bleaching are just a few examples. The full impact of these changes to the environment is unclear, but we are quickly learning that marine life is extremely sensitive to minor changes in temperature, probably more so than life on land.

Also at the top of my list would be men in speedos. It is just wrong.

If you could live one day in the life of a sea creature what would it be, and why?

Sailfish

I'd be a sailfish as it's the fastest swimming fish in the world reaching speeds of nearly 70 mph, and, if I only had one day, I'd want to see as much of the oceans as possible.

What is your favourite coral?

Tree corals (Nephtheidae) as they look like clusters of delicate, miniature blossom trees in full bloom.

What do you do, in detail?

I studied fine art and painting in DC for 4 years and was convinced I was either going to be a painter or a set designer. After I graduated I fell into working for an architect doing the interiors of their projects. I was majorly thrown in at the deep end, with my first ever project being the Hilton in Times Square, New York, which meant I had to learn very quickly! Despite thinking Interior Design was the last thing I would ever do, I moved back to London and partnered with my mother in her design company MM Design. Since then she and I have designed homes for some wonderful people and had some amazing projects together. She now lives in Austria most of the time and it is actually the perfect balance as design-wise we work so well together, as we have such a similar aesthetic but obviously for so many reasons , such different ideas which makes designing something together incredibly exciting, and (I think!) incredibly successful for our clients, since they get the best of both of us. And for us it's great because I still get to learn from her, but also learn to run things on my own, and she gets to do the bits she loves and then leave me to run the things she doesn't!

At the moment, I am trying to figure out a way to recycle/reuse/donate all the perfectly good things that we rip out of our projects, because that is a part of my job I find very hard to deal with. So much just has to get thrown away and it really makes me feel sick that there isn't a better way to deal with this. It's difficult because there are so many legalities and difficulties standing in your way. It seems like it should be simple but it isn't. One day I will figure out a way!

If you could live one day in the life of a sea creature what would it be, and why?

Maybe a ray. I don't really know why. They just seem very calm and peaceful the way they float around…

What song reminds you of beach life?

There is a song on one of the Café del Mar albums that reminds me of a road trip that I did through Italy. There were 4 of us in a Mini Cooper. and it seems like every time we were driving along a cliff road over-looking the ocean, or every time we pulled up to a beach, this song was playing. (The photo below is 3 of the 4 of us in the back of the Mini- I think that song is probably playing!) Also SNAP reminds me of when I was about 5 and my big brother was 16, and I would be allowed to go to the beach with him and his ueber-cool 16 year old friends, and it was always the SNAP album playing in the car. I thought he was the coolest person in the World!

Who are your preferred travelling companions?

Nick and Thimba

Nick and Thimba

From past experience I would have to say my friends Steffi and Olivia, we spent our Gap Year together in South America and we had a lot of fun…. More recently, for the ability to make the best out of a not so great situation, and make me laugh constantly and ridiculously happy despite pouring rain and no heating amongst other things, my boyfriend Nick.

What is your fondest memory of the beach?

If it has to be a beach beach, then I would have to say my holiday in Africa when I was about 11. The beaches on the islands of Mnemba and Pemba left me absolutely awestruck at the time. I had never seen such incredibly clear water or such white powdery beaches, but most importantly a place that was so untouched by tourism and humanity. It was magical and changed my life a little bit at the time. I have been dying to go back ever since. I just hope it hasn't been destroyed since then. Otherwise, I would have to say the 'beaches' at the lakes in Austria. Not much comes close to it. There is literally nothing like the feeling of diving into the freezing cold clear water of a mountain lake. Preferably naked!

My friends Joni and Steffi at the Attersee in Austria.

My friends Joni and Steffi at the Attersee in Austria.

What are you beach essentials?

I don't really need a lot at the beach. I suppose a hat and a book. And good sunscreen. My favourite thing in the world is having a doze on the beach, but it's never comfy on a towel and leaves funny marks on your face so you need something soft and luxurious to scrunch up and go to sleep on! Maybe one of my new Sophia Rogge sarongs…..since I couldn't decide which one I liked best I had to buy several, so I will have at least one for every purpose!

What was your biggest fashion or beauty disaster at the beach?

One involves the loss of both parts of a bikini while diving off a boat. They had metal rings on them and so sank immediately. Not fun. The other involves a hilarious friend and a naughty drawing with sunblock…

How long can you hold your breath underwater?

Freakishly long actually. My mother used to think I had drowned when I was little. I was nick-named the water rat. Its more endearing and sweet in German I promise!

What is your favourite sundowner and who would be your dream date?

I'm quite partial to Campari and Soda with a splash of freshly squeezed orange juice. Apparently no one drinks that anymore! I'm told it's very uncool. Dream date would have to be Nick since we haven't managed to have that holiday yet and I can't wait!

What do you consider to be the top cause for concern for your oceans?

Marine debris is one of the most widespread pollution problems we face, with plastics making up approximately three-quarters of all the rubbish floating in the ocean. Birds, fish and other wildlife can easily mistake smaller debris for food, choking them or blocking the digestive system. Ropes, old fishing gear, and other larger debris items can pose an entanglement danger to wildlife, damage sensitive ocean habitats like coral reefs, and interfere with maritime safety and navigation. Eliminating the threat of marine debris will help improve the ocean's resilience. Our ocean is our life-support system, and when we destroy our ocean we are destroying our own health and well-being.

Just to give an idea of the problem, here are some statistics from the 2009 coastal cleanup initiative:

Volunteers found 336 marine animals, including 138 birds, entangled in marine debris – 120 of the animals were still alive and released. Fishing line and nets were some of the most dangerous items, trapping over 200 animals. They also found 58,881 bottles of oil/lube during the cleanup. This is the amount that would be used to change the oil in nearly 12,000 mid-sized cars. Amazingly they also found 512,517 cups, plates, forks, knives and spoons – enough to provide a full set of dinnerware to over 100,000 people!

What is your favourite coral?

If you could spend one day in the life of a sea creature what would it be, and why?

I would like to be a mermaid but as they supposedly do not exist then I would be a dolphin as that's the nearest thing to human intelligence. They get to explore the ocean and can communicate through vibration.

Name the most secluded beach on Earth

Its not the most secluded beach but I love Thong Nai Pan beach in Thailand, I have Happy memories there. Below.

What song reminds you of beach life?

Although it sounds clichéd I love the song 'sitting on the dock of the bay' by Otis Redding. When I hear it I feel cosy like I'm sitting on a hot beach with warmth and the wind blowing through my hair. I also find most of Jack Johnsons songs bring me to a beach frame of mind, as when I spent a lot of time in Thailand his songs played over and over again in the beach huts out there.

Who is your preferred travelling companion?

I love travelling with Olly as he is always up for an adventure.

What is your fondest memory of the beach?

We use to sometimes take a sailing boat around Greece, I can remember we would pull up at secluded bays that did not have a single person on them, white sand and turquoise water. I would have to swim to the shore to explore it and there where olive trees and orange trees and loads of eucalyptus trees too. All the citrus and eucalyptus smells were so strong in the sun and it was such an overwhelming delicious smell.

What are your beach essentials?

I love to always take a sarong. They are so useful as they double up as everything and are light to carry in comparison to a heavy towel. You can use them to lie on and then wraparound you when you go to the bar or wrap around your head if burning to stop sun stroke, therefore I will definitely be stocking up on Sophia's summer sarongs. I also don't like to wear makeup on a beach but I often put Ultra glow original pressed bronzing powder on as you suddenly look so healthy and you don't feel like you're wearing anything plus it has factor 15 incorporated in it, so you are cream free on your face but looking tanned and healthy and sun protected all in one. Its AMAZING stuff - I could not live without it and it lasts a year. You have to order it online though and I would still advise on using sun cream but this definitely gives extra sun protection help and is good all year round.

What was your biggest fashion or beauty disaster at the beach?

I wouldn't say it was so much a fashion disaster but definitely a scary disaster moment made worse by a beauty product. I was with a group of friends who all went deep sea diving in Oman and I decided not to join and go for my own adventure, so I sprayed myself with a sun protector spray (which happened to be a very oily one) jumped in the sea and swam onto a rock island. When I looked back into the water there was a huge shark beneath me, so I called out to the boat but he couldn't get near to the rocks so I was going to have to swim back to the boat. I jumped in and went for it. To my horror as I tried to climb back into the boat my OILY SUNCREAM made me slip along the rubber edge of the boat. I could not get back into it and all I could hear in my head was the jaws theme tune, which lasted rather a long time. When I finally got back in the boat I was told the island I swam too was in fact called Shark Island !! Serves me alright for wearing the show off oil spray.

How long can you hold your breath underwater?

The length of a swimming pool.

What is your favourite sundowner and who would be your dream date?

I have noticed when I go to the Caribbean such as Antigua (below), everyone is always in a great mood, everyone has a smile on their face and is happy. They drink rum and so while out there I drank rum and ginger and felt in a constant good mood with no hangover unlike gin and tonic where you can feel a bit tired. From now on my drink is white rum mixed with spicy ginger beer - it's so delicious. I sometimes mix rum and citrus alibi too as then I don't get a hangover. You should try Alibi, it's delicious.

What do you consider to be the top cause for concern for your oceans?

The Arctic ice pack is thinning, and in many years there is also a seasonal hole in the Ozone layer. Reduction of the area of Arctic sea ice reduces the planet's average albedo (which is the area of white that the sun can shine on) this sea ice reducing is resulting in global warming. Research shows that the Arctic may become ice free for the first time in human history between 2012 and 2040. Many scientists are concerned that warming temperatures in the Arctic may cause large amounts of fresh melt water to enter the North Atlantic, possibly disrupting global ocean current patterns. Potentially severe changes in the Earth's climate are going to happen, and more and more tsunamis. To top this off the Arctic Ocean is also suffering with radioactive contamination from Russian radioactive waste dump sites in the Kara Sea. For this reason the Arctic area of the ocean greatly concerns me.

What is your fondest memory of the beach?

In 2007 going to Ibiza with 10 of my best girlfriends. We had lunch at the infamous Jockey Club on Salinas beach and were politely "asked to leave" when it got to 10pm as they all wanted to go home! It was pitch dark and we were still sinking the Rosé! A lunch that will never be forgotten! (see pic)

What was your biggest fashion or beauty disaster at the beach?

Again in India. We went just before the monsoon season and as a result not only was it boiling hot but humidity was practically at 100%! I was absolutely determined not to be beaten by the heat and stayed out far too long and ended up with the worst prickly heat all over my chest. I had to douse myself in calamine lotion and couldn't sit in the sun for two days. Very silly!

Who is your preferred travelling companion?

Andrew (see pic)

Name the most secluded hideaway beach on Earth

Agonda in the Southern part of Goa. It is a three-kilometre long, beautiful cove of white sand, secluded in the palms. It is also known as the silent beach as you can go for days without seeing a soul. I first went there in 2008 with my best friend Luce. I fell in love with it so much that I took my boyfriend Andrew there the following year. We had the most beautiful double sunbed covered with Indian silk. (see pic) We ended up staying for a month! It is a truly special place.
